Norman Greenbaum and the Eggery
“Oh I'm out in Petaluma
Spendin' my days...
Tell me how many eggs will a chicken lay
Oh Marvin got me started
Gave me my first hen
And now I got four and twenty
And twenty-four more again
Oh I'm out in Petaluma
Spendin' my days...
Tell me how many eggs will a chicken lay"
-Norman Greenbaum
You read that right! Norman Greenbaum, known best for his world-famous hit, "Spirit in the Sky," not only lived in Petaluma, but rehearsed and performed with his band (Crossfire) right here at The Eggery, crediting Marvin Dolowitz (owner of The Eggery) himself with introducing him to farm living! He wrote his album, "Petaluma" about The Eggery and even held an album signing event on location in 1972. Norman Greenbaum and his wife moved to Penngrove that same year where he focused on his music and his wife operated their goat farm, Velvet Acres. It was the overalls-clad “Petaluma” album that gave Greenbaum a reputation as a farmer.
